An email from a collegue alerted me to this website. I found the discussions of the image of librarians very interesting. A sidetrack took me to this page which is a look at library cards and the image they project. Looking at our own library cards after reading this article I have decided that although our cards are attractive 
(they feature photos of the local area) they aren't very distinctive and they don't say "library".

The phone number and website address is on the back but in quite small writing - I didn't even realise it was there till I examined my card in detail! Before I worked in the library I always kept one of the library's business cards in with my library card as it had opening times and contact details on it.
